Speed Limits Around the Country Being Raised and Lowered

Over the past few years the trend has been to increase speed limits across the country. For example in 2012, Texas lifted its speed limit to 85 mph, and Maine has raised speed limits on sections of some Interstates to 75 mph.

However there is now a move afoot to go the other way, as some cities and states begin to introduce lower speed limits.

As far back as 2009 in Columbia, speed limits were reduced to 25 mph from 30 mph and Portland, in 2012, agreed to reduce the speed limit in around 70 miles of residential streets from 25 mph to 20 mph.

Recently, in Baton Rouge speed limits were cut back to 25 mph on over a thousand miles of residential streets and one by one City Councils are jumping on the bandwagon to reduce speed limits in town centers and residential areas.

Tips for Safer Driving

Safety on America’s roads is the number one priority of the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. According to the administration’s website, its purpose and mission is to significantly reduce the number of car accidents and subsequent injuries and fatalities in the United States by educating driver, cyclists, and pedestrians about traffic safety and working to change driving habits and behavior. So what can drivers do to affect positive change in the safety of America’s highways?

  • Be Alert – It is easy to get distracted by kids, cell phones, and music playing devices while driving. Staying alert at all times and being keenly aware of your surroundings is critical for all drivers in order to ensure their own safety and that of their passengers and others on the road.
  • Drive to Conditions – Weather and road conditions play a huge role in driving safety. Rain, snow, sun glare, and uneven roads are all potential hazards that can adversely affect driver capability. Adjust your speed and stay within your driving comfort zone when experiencing adverse conditions. Also stay aware of advisory signs warning of construction and other details about the road on which you are driving.
  • Be Safe at Night – Driving at night is inherently more dangerous than during the day for the simple fact that visibility is reduced. This is compounded if there is rain, snow, sleet, or other precipitation. Driving at a reasonable speed, adjusting mirrors to reduce glare from other vehicles’ headlights, and averting your gaze from oncoming headlights are all things that drivers can do to stay safe while driving after dark.
